What Would Happen If They Fell in Love With Your Emails?
In the past 7 months I’ve tapped into empathy and email to fill 3 group programs, 2 masterminds and my one on one coaching practice.
Now you might be thinking, yeah but you have a huge list!
I don’t. I have less than 1000 people on my list. I haven’t focused at all on growing my list. I’ve focused on entirely on my relationship with those who have found their way TO my list.
I don’t care how big yours is either. You may have 100 people on your list, you might have 100,000. I’m telling you, it doesn’t matter.
I’ve seen business owners with lists of 100,000 who could barely sell anything to them. I’ve seen lists of 10,000 outperform all the huge guru lists in affiliate contests.
It’s not the size that counts, it’s the relationship that matters.
Here are three skills to master if you want to increase open rates, engagement and sales in your email marketing, regardless of your list size.
First Impressions Last a Lifetime…
And making no impression lasts a life time too! You’ve got less than 2 seconds to get and keep your reader’s attention.
Think of your email marketing as dating.
Your subject line is the first thing you say on the date. It’s how you show up to pick them up or meet them. It’s what your wearing, your vibe, your eye contact. It sets the mood for the rest of the evening. Yet so many people write subject lines that are totally impersonal.
Why?
Because sitting behind a computer all day creates psychic distance, and we’ve grown comfortable with that.
If you want to write remarkably, close that gap. Be the one brave enough to deeply connect while others sell their audience short with strategy, or even worse, gimmickry.
Write your subject line LAST. Write the email then ask yourself, “What is the ONE THING I really want people to get from reading this email?”
And then “Can I frame this in a story? Can I put a face or name on it and make it personal?”
When you do this consistently your audience becomes part of a conversation, and they feel connected to you. They do not feel “marketed to,” or even worse, “marketed AT.”
Got Digital Empathy?
Great marketing is never about the marketer.
You get that? It’s never about YOU.
It’s about THEM.
Empathy is the experience of feeling what someone else is feeling. Digital empathy is experiencing empathy and conveying it in a way that makes sense for that specific platform.
What do people want in their email inbox?
Communication from people they care about, or people they are doing business with.
Do friends and families, or people they are doing business with send them bullet lists and benefits? Probably not. They send personal communications.
Before you go to write, stop, think about, and feel into the person you are writing to. What is happening for them? Where are they at? Chances are, you’re only a few steps ahead of them and it wasn’t too long ago that you shared their problems, their fears, their desires. In fact, maybe on some level you still do.
Tap into that. Use that. That’s where the juice is.
Literally FEEL this while you are writing.
Then put the emotions into a structure, with a call to action to do something specific at the end. Sometimes people miss this one and just get the emotional engagement piece down. It’s emotionally inspired action that we are really going for here.
Which leads me to the next point.
Story It!
You’ve now gotten them to open it. And they are FEELING that you feel them. They feel a part of a conversation. They feel connected and close.
Now what is it that you are trying to teach or show them?
Let the email marketing BE the coach. Enter into a coaching relationship with your reader by giving them value, and give them value through a great story.
I wrote a 3-part email series about a toothless woman stealing my potato chips at the Port Authority in NYC, how I got broken up with in the middle of the night while sleeping, and how my internet marketing career took off. I sold out a mastermind from that 3-part email series.
When doing this on your own first decide “the point” or the “coaching breakthrough” you aim to provide in this email. Then think of a story that shows, rather than tells this. Give them an actual EXPERIENCE.
You can do this. It’s simple and just takes practice. Start writing and see what flows!

Recently I realized that most people do not have the time to master a lot of complex marketing. You just want to get on with the business of offering what you’re great at… you don’t want to dork out on launch structure, advanced copy, traffic, strategy, affiliates.
I get it.
So I’ve been looking for the fastest ways to get you into the greatest results, while remaining authentic to the heart and soul of YOU and your business.
I put together this “swipe file” ebook for you called Email Alchemy: Increase Your Open Rates and Engagement, Inspire Your Audience into Empowered Action.”
It’s got the 3 part email series I just told you about that sold out a mastermind, it’s got an example of an email I wrote for an affiliate partner, an email series I wrote to pre-launch my membership site, and my best performing subject lines with open rates starting at 29% all the way up to 60% (which is 3 to 6 times industry standard.)
You can grab your copy here for $27.
I’m excited for you to connect more deeply with your people, and create results with that!
